The Human Subtle Bodies

A human being is one of the most complex and multifaceted creations in the Universe. When viewed on a subtle energetic level, it becomes clear that the human structure is far more than just a physical body. We are accustomed to thinking of the human body as bones, muscles, blood, lymph, and internal organs. However, this is only a small part of the complete picture. In reality, each of us possesses at least seven subtle bodies — energetic layers, each performing its own unique function and connected to a corresponding energy center, or chakra. The subtle bodies are carriers of consciousness at different levels of existence within the Absolute. Each body consists of matter belonging to its own dimension and vibrational range. All seven bodies surround the physical body in layers, overlapping one another like an energetic nesting doll. Together, they form the human aura — an individual energy field. It is precisely the state of this aura that determines everything: physical health, emotional balance, intuitive strength, clarity of thought, depth of spiritual development, and even the kinds of people and events that enter one’s life. The cleaner and stronger the energy field, the more harmonious and fulfilling one’s reality becomes.

1

Frequency Structure

Each subtle body has its own vibrational range and density, which determine its level of activity and interaction with the physical body and the surrounding space.

2

Informational Capacity

Subtle bodies store information about experiences, emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and the soul’s journey, forming a person’s energetic programs.

3

Connection with Consciousness and Human States

The condition of the subtle bodies directly reflects emotional balance, mental processes, and the level of awareness.

4

Influence on the Physical Body and Life Events

Imbalances or distortions in the subtle bodies eventually manifest on the physical level and in life scenarios, while harmonization supports healing and systemic integrity.

The Meaning and Role of Each Subtle Body

  • The Physical Body — Meaning and Role

First Layer — The Physical Body

Our physical body consists of a skeletal framework upon which the muscular system, the circulatory and lymphatic systems, as well as the internal organs are built. It is the material оболочка of the human being that allows us to exist in earthly reality.

The physical body has the lowest vibrational level compared to the other six subtle bodies and serves as an instrument of perception and action. Through it, a person gains experience of earthly existence, interacts with the world, realizes desires, and manifests spiritual tasks in material form.

    Functions of the physical body:

✅ Sustaining life and ensuring the proper functioning of the organism

✅ Enabling movement, sensation, and action

✅ Reflecting the state of the other subtle bodies through health or illness

✅ Accumulating experience and learning through bodily sensations

The physical body is the foundation upon which all other subtle bodies are built and expressed. Caring for it — through proper nutrition, breathing, movement, sleep, and cleansing — is an essential part of spiritual development and energetic harmony.

  • The Etheric Body — Meaning and Role

Second Layer — The Etheric Body

The etheric body is an exact energetic replica of the physical body, in which each internal organ has its own energetic projection. It represents an electromagnetic layer of light blue, white, or silvery-gray shimmering energy that extends beyond the physical body at a distance of approximately 1 to 10 cm.

Ether is a transitional state between matter and energy. Through the etheric body, a person is connected to the invisible subtle world and the higher forces of the Universe. Essentially, it serves as a bridge linking the dense physical оболочка with the subtle plane of existence.

In the language of modern science, the etheric body can be described as the human energetic matrix. It consists of energy channels and meridians through which energy circulates continuously — much like blood flows through veins or electric current moves through wires. This complex system contains comprehensive information about the state of the body, from organ function to the chemical composition of the blood. In this sense, the etheric body can be compared to an energetic medical record of a person.

The etheric body is responsible for:

⚡️ the level of vital energy

    ⚡️ health and immunity

    ⚡️ vitality and physical strength

⚡️ physical condition, flexibility, and mobility

    ⚡️ productivity and overall vitality

Factors that contaminate the etheric body:

☠️ destructive thoughts, words, and actions

☠️ chronic stress and negative thinking

    ☠️ inability to relax

    ☠️ a sedentary lifestyle

☠️ unbalanced nutrition and toxic food

☠️ accumulation of toxins and metabolic waste in the body

☠️ use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs

☠️ depressive states and emotional withdrawal

When a person leads a destructive lifestyle, the etheric body gradually becomes thinner, loses its integrity, and its energetic capacity decreases. Weak areas appear, forming energetic gaps through which vital energy is lost. At first, this manifests as disturbances on the energetic level and later develops into physical illness.

  • The Astral Body — Meaning and Role

The Astral (Emotional) Body — Meaning and Role

The astral body is an energetic layer responsible for the sphere of human emotions, feelings, and experiences. It has a higher vibrational frequency than the etheric body and extends approximately 10 to 30 cm beyond the physical body. Its color spectrum constantly changes depending on a person’s emotional state — from light and delicate tones during harmony to dark and cloudy shades during negative emotions.

The astral body acts as a conductor of emotional energy and is closely connected to the heart chakra (Anahata). Love, joy, inspiration, and gratitude strengthen the astral body, making it bright and luminous. In contrast, resentment, anger, fear, jealousy, and envy darken its structure, creating stagnation and energetic blocks that may later manifest as physical health issues.

    Functions of the astral body:

✨ storage and expression of emotions and feelings

✨ formation of emotional bonds with others

✨ support of the heart and nervous system

✨ interaction with the subtle realm through dreams and intuition

✨ development of the capacity for love, compassion, and empathy

Factors that weaken the astral body:

☠️ chronic stress and emotional trauma

☠️ suppressed or destructive emotions (anger, resentment, envy)

    ☠️ addictions (emotional and physical)

☠️ toxic relationships and unhealthy attachments

    ☠️ a negative social environment

A harmonious astral body manifests as inner light, emotional stability, ease in communication, and the ability to love.

When it becomes imbalanced or polluted, a person may experience emotional instability, depressive states, hysterical reactions, and chronic fatigue.

  • The Mental Body — Meaning and Role

The Mental (Intellectual) Body — Meaning and Role

The mental body is the human energetic layer that forms the framework of thoughts, knowledge, memories, and behavioral patterns. It is located approximately 30–80 cm beyond the physical body and emits a luminous yellowish radiance.

Emotions arise at the level of the astral body, while thoughts originate at the level of the mental body. Any mental process — learning, analysis, awareness, or subconscious programming — first appears in the mental body and only afterward manifests in physical reality.

It is important to understand that all information remains stored within the mental body permanently. This is where thought-forms are created — energetic structures produced by the process of thinking. These structures are connected to three levels:

    ✅ the astral body (emotions)

    ✅ the mental body (thoughts)

✅ the causal body (manifestation through action)

These levels are inseparably linked and together determine human behavior in society. An emotion arises on the astral level, transforms into a thought on the mental level, and at the level of the causal body, the thought takes form and is realized through actions.

    Functions of the mental body:

✨ formation of thoughts, ideas, logic, and analytical thinking

✨ storage of beliefs, principles, and life attitudes

✨ regulation of the perception of reality

✨ programming of behavior and reactions

✨ connection with higher levels of consciousness and spiritual development

Factors that weaken and damage the mental body:

☠️ negative thinking and excessive self-criticism

    ☠️ limiting beliefs

☠️ false mental patterns and distorted perception

☠️ information overload and mental noise

☠️ imposed stereotypes and external thought patterns

☠️ prolonged states of fear or anxiety

A harmonious mental body manifests as mental clarity, ease of learning, the ability to concentrate, and sound decision-making. A person with a strong mental body is capable of free thinking, critical evaluation of events, and finding constructive paths of development.

The higher the vibrational level of the mental body, the more refined and higher-quality knowledge a person is able to receive from the subtle planes.

When the mental body becomes polluted or imbalanced, symptoms such as distractibility, loss of focus, intrusive thoughts, learning difficulties, negative belief systems, and distorted perception of reality may appear..

  • The Causal Body — Meaning and Role

The Causal (Karmic) Body — Meaning and Role

The causal body, also known as the karmic body, is the energetic layer of a person responsible for destiny, actions, and cause-and-effect relationships. It emits a soft golden-white light and extends approximately 80–120 cm beyond the physical body.

All human actions, emotions, and thoughts are preserved within the energetic field, and each of them is recorded on its own level:

✅ the astral body stores emotions and feelings

✅ the mental body stores thoughts and information

✅ the causal body stores actions and their consequences, imprinting them in the memory of the Universe

Every human action — including inaction — has a cause and a purpose. Moreover, every action leads to a result and becomes the cause of subsequent events. Everything, from a simple step to the construction of a house, has a reason, meaning, and intention.

Where do our desires to act in a certain way come from? Why are some people able to manifest their dreams with ease, while others repeatedly face obstacles? Why are some born into wealth while others experience scarcity?

The answers to these and many other questions are held within the human karmic, or causal, body. Acting as an informational field, it preserves the memory of all actions of the soul across its many incarnations. This is why it is called the karmic body. It is here that karma is formed — the totality of all actions of the soul and their results, meaning what a person receives in return.

    Functions of the causal body:

✨ storage of information about past lives and completed actions

✨ formation of karmic lessons and life scenarios

✨ explanation of the causes of current life circumstances (health, family, level of abundance)

✨ connection between thought and its manifestation through action

✨ correction of the soul’s path through experience and challenges

The karmic body can be understood as the informational field of the soul, where all deeds accumulated over many incarnations are stored. Therefore, it provides answers to questions such as:

✅ why a person is born into specific conditions

✅ why some easily manifest their dreams while others must pass through difficult trials

✅ which events lie ahead and which lessons must be learned

Karma is the universal law of cause and effect — absolutely just and impartial. According to this law, every living being receives what it has earned, and through this process the energetic balance of the Universe is maintained.

    What weakens the causal body:

☠️ repetition of the same mistakes

☠️ refusal to accept life lessons

☠️ destructive actions toward oneself or others

☠️ unwillingness to take responsibility for one’s destiny

A harmonious causal body manifests as the ability to live consciously, recognize the interconnection of events, accept karmic lessons, and transform them into spiritual growth. A person with a strong causal body understands that they are the creator of their own reality.

  • The Buddhic Body — Meaning and Role

The Buddhic (Intuitive) Body — Meaning and Role

The buddhic body, also known as the intuitive body, is an energetic layer responsible for higher wisdom, insights, and connection with the informational field of the Universe. Unlike other subtle bodies, it allows a person to go beyond the limits of the physical form and ordinary intellect and to access the space known as the Akashic Records — the universal archive of knowledge.

The buddhic body is directly connected to the sixth chakra (Ajna, the third eye), which governs intuition, inner vision, and higher perception.

Functions and characteristics of the buddhic body:

✨ storage and reception of higher knowledge

✨ connection with intuition and spiritual vision

✨ access to the informational field of the Universe

emergence of inspired ideas and sudden insights

✨ resolution of complex challenges through inspiration rather than logic

✨ awakening of compassion, unconditional love, and awareness of the unity of all existence

Clairvoyants, spiritual teachers, and healers work primarily through the intuitive body. The more developed the buddhic body is, the more clearly a person navigates life, the greater the flow of ideas and aspirations, and the deeper the understanding of one’s true purpose.

    What weakens the buddhic body:

    ☠️ egoism and arrogance

    ☠️ rejection of spiritual development

☠️ living solely through material interests

☠️ fears and doubts that block intuition

☠️ unwillingness to listen to one’s inner self

A harmonious buddhic body manifests as clear intuition, openness to knowledge, inspiration, and the ability to find answers beyond logic — through inner knowing. A person with a well-developed buddhic body experiences unity with the world and becomes a conduit of higher truth.

  • The Atmic Body — Meaning and Role

The Seventh Layer — The Atmic Body (The Body of Spirit and Divine Purpose)

The atmic body is the highest, most subtle, and most powerful of the seven human bodies. It exists above all other layers and connects the previous six bodies with the Absolute, with God, and with the primordial Source of all existence.

The name atmic body originates from the Sanskrit term Atma, which means “the soul that has realized itself.”

Atma is the union of the being with the Absolute.

Atma is a state of enlightenment in which a person comes to know God through their own inner Self.

Functions and qualities of the atmic body:

✨ unites the soul with Divine energy and the Absolute

✨ transmits a person’s prayer or intention toward God and receives the response from higher realms

✨ serves as the key to spiritual awareness and enlightenment

✨ helps the soul recognize its true purpose and essence

When a person prays, meditates, or performs selfless acts, it is the atmic body that transmits this energy to the higher levels of existence. In response, an energetic exchange occurs: the soul receives goodness and light many times greater than what was given.

    Functioning of the atmic body

Maintaining the active functioning of the atmic body is possible for only a few, as it requires:

✅ constant presence and awareness in the “here and now”

✅ inner stillness and deep mindfulness

✅ purification from ego, fears, and attachments

Meditation and spiritual practices help attune the atmic body to receive higher energy. During such moments, many people experience a surge of strength, joy, inspiration, and may receive guidance or insight from higher realms.

However, for most people the atmic body remains in a “dormant state.” Blocks formed at the lower levels — physical, etheric, astral, mental, and karmic — prevent energy from rising freely upward. As a result, a person remains confined to everyday concerns, without access to higher knowledge.

The Path to the Atmic Body

To activate the atmic body, one must begin with the foundation — the physical body:

⚡️ cleansing the body, proper nutrition, sleep, and rest

    ⚡️ releasing harmful habits

⚡️ working consciously with emotions, thoughts, and behavior

⚡️ self-discipline, education, and the development of awareness

As a person purifies and strengthens the physical, etheric, astral, mental, and karmic bodies, they gradually prepare for the awakening of the atmic level. This is a long-term process that requires years of inner work, not weeks. This is why monks, sages, and spiritual teachers serve as examples — individuals who attained harmony and unity with the Absolute through decades of dedicated practice.

A harmonious atmic body manifests as a deep sense of life’s meaning, union with Divine energy, inner freedom, and an enlightened state of spirit. Such a person becomes a conduit of light and love, and their actions arise from higher wisdom, bringing benefit to themselves and to the world.

The Aura and the Subtle Bodies: What Is the Difference?

Subtle Bodies — The Structure of the Human Energy System

Subtle bodies are individual energetic levels of a human being, each operating at its own frequency and performing a specific function. Together, they form the inner energetic structure of a person. Each subtle body: has its own sphere of influence, is responsible for specific processes — health, emotions, thinking, destiny, and spiritual development, may be more or less developed, balanced, or, conversely, weakened and blocked. Subtle bodies are the “layers” of the human energy system that function from within.

The Aura — The Overall Energy Field

The aura is a unified energy field that surrounds and permeates the physical body of a person and is formed by all subtle bodies simultaneously. The aura: reflects their overall condition at a given moment, shows how harmoniously all levels of the energy system interact, changes its color, density, and form depending on a person’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual state, functions as a kind of “screen” on which disruptions, energy leakages, overloads, and imbalances become visible.

The aura is the result and reflection of the state of all subtle bodies. Subtle bodies form the energetic structure of a person, while the aura shows the current state of that structure.

Aura characteristics:

The aura is an electromagnetic energy–information field that surrounds and permeates the physical body of a human being. By its nature, the aura represents a multilayered structure composed of seven subtle energetic layers (bodies). Each of these bodies is formed by vibrational fields of different frequencies and is directly connected to the chakra system. Every layer of the aura performs its own specific function and reflects particular aspects of human existence — from physical health to emotional states, mental patterns, and the level of spiritual awareness. The aura is highly sensitive to both internal and external factors. Positive states — such as love, joy, inspiration, and gratitude — strengthen its structure. Negative influences — including stress, anger, illness, trauma, toxic environments, and the impact of other people — weaken the energy field. In a harmonious state, the aura is dense, stable, and coherent; in a state of imbalance, it becomes weakened, diffuse, and unstable. Disturbances in the aura — such as breaches, blockages, and energy leakage — lead to a decrease in vital energy, emotional instability, a sense of inner emptiness, and, over time, manifest as physical illnesses. The aura participates in the energetic exchange between a person and the surrounding world and serves as an accurate indicator of one’s overall condition — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. It can be cleansed, restored, and strengthened through energy practices, breathing techniques, conscious awareness work, sound, light, and vibrational therapies. It is important to understand that working with the aura is impossible without working with the subtle bodies. Harmonization of the subtle bodies automatically leads to the cleansing, strengthening, and stabilization of the aura.

1

The aura has the form of an oval energy cocoon that surrounds a person and extends beyond the physical body at a distance ranging from several centimeters up to one meter.

2

The aura is dynamic: its color, brightness, density, and size depend on a person’s physical condition, emotional state, thoughts, actions, intentions, and karmic purity.

3

The aura is directly connected to the chakras: each chakra emits a specific type of vibrations and energies that form the corresponding part of the aura.

4

The aura is an energy–information field in which, like on a screen, all inner states of a person and the consequences of external influences are reflected.

Functions of the aura:

  • Reflects a person’s inner state
  • Shows the psycho-emotional, mental, and spiritual condition.
  • Records external influences
  • Displays the impact of people, events, the environment, and stress factors.
  • Serves as an informational field of the personality
  • Contains information about the state of consciousness and the soul’s experience.
  • Is connected to the subtle bodies and chakras
  • Reflects their activity and the harmony of their interaction.
  • Facilitates energy exchange with the world
  • Participates in interaction with people, space, the Earth, and the Cosmos.
  • Carries information about karma and life lessons
  • Reflects karmic processes and their influence on a person’s life path.
  • Acts as an indicator of overall condition
  • Shows the level of energy, balance, and harmony.
  • Is capable of restoration and transformation
  • Can be cleansed and strengthened through conscious inner work and practices.

Aura Disturbances:

  • Energy breaches — localized energy leaks that arise during intense emotional shock, stress, or trauma.
  • Tears and cracks — disruptions in the integrity of the energy field through which vital energy decreases.
  • Energetic contamination — accumulation of negative emotional and mental states, as well as the influence of a toxic environment.
  • General weakening of the aura — a reduction in the density and stability of the energy field, making a person more vulnerable to external influences.
  • Imbalance of the aura layers — lack of harmony between the subtle bodies and the chakra system.
  • Disturbances in the energy field can lead to decreased vitality, chronic fatigue, emotional instability, depressive states, energy depletion, increased susceptibility to external influences, and over time may manifest as physical illnesses.
